Kuboraum: masks designed on the face of those who wear them

Kuboraum, from the german term meaning  “cubic room”, one of the most innovative eyewear brands of recent times.

The name, chosen by the project creators, Livio Graziottin and Sergio Eusebi, tells us a lot about their unmistakable style and their brand concept.

KUBORAUM EYEWEAR: THE MESSAGE

Kuboraum’s mission is a Declaration of Independence from industrial logic, a logic in which design finds its purpose exclusively in mass merchandising and compulsive sales.

The brand wants to be a new point of view for ethical design, aimed at confirming the uniqueness of the individual and - at the same time - the concept of community.

EYES ARE POWER, POINTS OF VIEW ARE PEOPLE

Kuboraum glasses are a creative experiment, focused on the analysis of the state of anxiety, generated from the contrast between what one is and what one would like to be; between the true self, known only to ourselves and what others know.

The tool is a metaphorical MASK; glasses are in fact seen as protection from the outside world and from mass consumer culture, as a "happy island" and a reassuring tool, but also as a real mirror of oneself, as an external transposition of one's inner state of mind.

"For us, eyeglasses are sculptures, which attract people ready to embark on a strong relationship first with themselves and then with the glasses, which are no longer an inanimate object, but which acquire the power of a mask. Each mask has its own style and power, but as soon as it is worn, it acquires the character of the person that wears it.”

The Kuboraum philosophy goes hand in hand with impeccable eye couture, quality materials and exceptional Italian artisanal craftsmanship.

THE  HISTORY OF KUBORAUM

The Italian designers Livio Graziotti (artist, sculptor and designer) and Sergio Eusebi (brand director) met in Berlin, during the vernissage of an art gallery in 2009 and just two years later the first Kuboraum project collection was born. Immediately the aesthetic of their eyewear design favoured innovation, breaking with tradition, away from traditional eyewear design. The project took off in 2012 and the brand was instantly recognised for its traditional, artisanal production rigorously made in Italy;  Eusebi and Graziotti themselves define Kuboraum glasses as "dreamed in Berlin and handmade in Italy". The Berlin studio was originally located in the rooms of a former post office, on the border between East and West Berlin, which had been previously converted into a gallery.

After subsequent metamorphoses of the project, the same space now houses the studio, showroom and Kuboraum flagship store. There was also a side-specific multimedia-installation by Dj Red in April 2019.  Today the brand collaborates with many world-renowned artists from the worlds of art and contemporary music to offer a new and ever changing panorama of shapes and ideas. In 2018, the first Kuboraum Artist Residence was inaugurated, open to talented young artists.

KUBORAUM EYEWEAR

The collections are divided in the SUN MASK COLLECTION, Kuboraum sunglasses with their unique style, with a wide range of diverse materials. Round, cat-eye, square, butterfly, rectangular or mask shaped but never predictable or banal. Many of the glasses do not necessarily fit into any one category; each  has its own unique style and personality; trying to assign them a single word description would be reductive, and the OPTICAL MASK COLLECTION, practical and functional but always whimsical and original. No detail is left to chance.
